“Listen! A sower went out to sow.
As he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 2

But when the sun rose, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it produced no fruit.
But other seed fell into good soil and produced fruit that grew and increased; some bore thirty, some sixty, and some a hundred times more than what was sown.” 2

He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he does not know how.

With many similar parables he spoke the word to them, to the extent that they were able to understand it.
He did not speak to them without using a parable, but privately he explained everything to his disciples. 1
